Diablo 4 DLC release date speculation, content, and more

Discover when we expect the Diablo 4 expansion release date to be and how far along Activision Blizzard is in completing work on the upcoming expansions.

Diablo 4 DLC release date: Donan is wearing a fur coat with an elaborate golden necklace.

When does the Diablo 4 DLC release? As if the latest in the long-running series wasn’t big enough, it seems that there are not one but two upcoming expansions coming in the future, and that’s not counting the myriad of seasonal ladders we will experience soon.

We can draw on our knowledge of Diablo 4 as well as Blizzard’s marketing tactics to estimate when the Diablo 4 DLC might be released, thanks to previous series data. Previous expansions have introduced new Diablo 4 classes to completely change the meta, new items to give us excitingly powerful Diablo 4 builds, and encounters with Prime Evils not seen in the base game.

Diablo 4 DLC release date speculation

The Diablo 4 DLC release date is expected in late 2024. Activision Blizzard has previously treated Diablo expansions like a decent stew: it’s done when it’s done. Given the announcement of two expansions on the horizon, it’s unlikely to be much later than next year.

We are confident about the timescales thanks to previous data from older Diablo games. While the Lords of Destruction expansion for Diablo 2 was precisely a year after the base game, the Reaper of Souls expansion to Diablo 3 came just under two years later. The first game was even sooner than that, with Diablo Hellfire coming just ten months after the original game’s release date. However, with the content that appears in Diablo expansions these days, this quick turnaround is unlikely for Diablo 4.

Due to Diablo 2 having multiple expansions, we’d expect Diablo 4 to follow a similar format, with the first DLC being released in 2024 and the second in early-to-mid 2026.

In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Diablo 4 general manager, Rod Fergusson, confirmed the existence of upcoming Diablo 4 expansions, explaining that the development team is “working on expansion one” and “kicking off expansion 2”. This is separate from the seasonal ladder content, which Fergusson says the team is “finishing up season one” and “working on season two”.

Diablo 4 DLC content speculation

As Diablo 4 covered the world of Sanctuary’s eastern region in its base game, there’s still the western area to discover. We also would expect Blizzard to add a new class with each expansion, such as the Paladin. A level cap increase is almost guaranteed based on previous games in the franchise.

We’d also like to see new enemy types to give the game more variety, as well as new activities, world bosses, and events. This would address players’ comments that the game becomes repetitive, whilst not changing the successful format of Diablo 4 as a whole.

We’d hope that Lilith’s father, Mephisto, could be considered one major boss for any of the future Diablo 4 DLC. At the end of the main Diablo 4 story, spoiler alert, we slayed Lilith for good, but Mephisto was still hanging around so there’s a strong possibility we’ll come face-to-face with him again in the DLC.

And that’s everything we know about the Diablo 4 DLC expansions. Note that Diablo 4 Seasons are separate, so we’ll likely learn more about them shortly. There’s also plenty of information about the Diablo 4 battle pass if you want bonus cosmetic items or the Diablo 4 World Tiers if you want that extra challenge. Finally, if you’re still on the fence, here’s our Diablo 4 review with our thoughts on the latest demon-slaying game.
